'Celtic Fields' – Stiefkinder der Archäologie Archaeology's stepchildren
Spuren urgeschichtlicher Beackerung in West-, Mittel-, Ost- und Nordeuropa: 'Celtic Fields' und Altwege
Traces of prehistoric farming in Western, Central, Eastern and Northern Europe: 'Celtic Fields' and Ancient Roads

Celtic Fields' generally do not leave any recessed paths, but are virtually marked by the pathless contiguous plots. I know of only two cases of paths that were created together with the plots or during the cultivation period. In contrast, one often finds old roads and bundles of paths that do not take into account the plots and cut through them.

A well-known example of an old road from the cultivation period of Celtic Fields can be found in Øster Lem Hede, West Jutland. The relatively narrow road is set off from the plots by boundary walls. Such a road is an absolute exception. Immediately to the west of it there is another old road track, which apparently only came into being after the plots had been abandoned.

A second example of a somewhat wider old path from the Celtic Fields cultivation period is in Sachsenwald, east of Hamburg. It lies in the middle of 'Celtic Fields' with partly very irregular boundaries interspersed with many Late Bronze Age burial mounds. The conspicuous traces in the north, the open rectangle and the crescent-shaped rampart date from recent times. A C14 date from the western boundary wall dates to around Chr. birth. Unfortunately, after the laser data was collected, very rough forestry was practised here and this track was thus largely destroyed.

In Lundby Hede in northern Jutland, several once intensively used old road bundles cut through the heath landscape and, as far as they have survived, also the 'Celtic Fields', and in this form they were definitely created later.

In Orkanow in southern Poland, 'Celtic Fields' lie on now wooded hilltops. Three old roads, conspicuous bundles, cross the hill from north to south and partly cross the 'Celtic Fields' without taking them into consideration. Again, the old tracks in their present form are younger than the fields. Weiter more...
