Spuren römischer Beackerung in West- und Mitteleuropa Traces of Roman farming in Western and Central Europe: Forêt de Crécy-NW,Somme Zurück Back
Nordwestlicher Teil des Forêt de Crécy nahe der Mündung der Somme in den Altlantik. Zu erkennen sind neben dem modernen Wegesystem zahlreiche von Wällen umgrenzte Parzellen römischen Typs, außerdem eine Reihe von Gebäudewüstungen, von denen häufig sektorenförmige Parzellen ausstrahlen. Nur einige davon könnten als Villae rusticae gelten, auch ist die Frage, ob alle glelchzeitig bestanden. Weiterhin finden sich verschliffene Pingenfelder, die teilweise in römischer Zeit in das Kulturland einbezogen wurden, wie darüber hinweg verlaufende Parzellengrenzen bezeugen. Diese Pingen dürften wahrscheinlich im Zuge jungsteinzeitlichen Flintbergbaus entstanden sein. Ferner gibt es Spuren antiker Wege in Form von Doppelkonturen sowie verstreute Grabhügel und einzelne Mergelgruben. Die Bedeutuing der vielen kleinen Gruben ist unklar, nur ein kleiner Teil davon dürfte auf Artilleriebeschuss im ersten Weltkrieg zurückgehen; sie sind teilweise auffällig längs der antiken Feldraine aufgereiht. In addition to the modern road system, numerous Roman-style plots surrounded by embankments can be seen, as well as a number of abandoned buildings, from which sector-shaped plots often radiate. Only some of these could be considered villae rusticae, and it is also unclear whether they all existed at the same time. There are also worn-down fields of pits, some of which were incorporated into cultivated land in Roman times, as evidenced by the parcel boundaries running across them. These pits were probably created during Neolithic flint mining. There are also traces of ancient roads in the form of double contours, as well as scattered burial mounds and individual marl pits. The significance of the many small pits is unclear; only a small proportion of them are likely to date back to artillery fire during the First World War; some of them are conspicuously lined up along the ancient field margins.
