Der Forêt de Hémilly südwestlich von Metz in Lothringen zeigt dort, wo die Mardellen vorkommen, zumindest Fragmente von Feldbegrenzungen römischen Typs, es sei denn, sie wurden von späteren Wölbbeeten völlig überprägt wie im Nordosten der Grafik. Wo keine Mardellen sind, sind auch keine antiken Bewirtschaftungsspuren erkennbar. Dies und die flächige Verteilung der Mardellen belegt hinlänglich ihren artifiziellen Charakter. The Forêt de Hémilly southwest of Metz in Lorraine shows at least fragments of Roman-style field boundaries where the mardelles occur, unless they were completely overlaid by later ridge-and-furrow beds, as in the northeast of the graphic. Where there are no mardelles, there are also no traces of ancient cultivation. This, together with the widespread distribution of the mardelles, sufficiently proves their artificial nature.
